Just a little reminder for you and for me too.
“Go where your focus is”……..
What does that mean you might be thinking? Our minds will often go off on different thoughts and tangents and we can find ourselves acting in a way or doing things in a way we may not like, or we may even like, or it may not make us feel good. Let me paint a picture…..
Visualize yourself, you have a work deadline to meet, you’re at home and about to sit down to finish it before submitting it that afternoon. But, instead of sitting down you walk to the pantry and commence eating cookies out of the box. Now, there is no judgment here all I’m trying to do is to get you to understand that in that moment although your deadline is pretty high up on your list of immediate ‘to do’s’ you instead find yourself face deep in a box of cookies….Go where your focus has gone. Your focus in the present moment is eating the cookies, so bring further attention and awareness to that action. Ask yourself questions to try and gauge why you aren’t finishing the deadline you really want and need to send to your boss. It’s often in these moments we can ‘zone out’ or ‘numb out’ and before we know it an hour has gone by and we then robotically move back to our original task, without giving our divergence much thought. This is where meditation and mindfulness are so important, because they can help bring you back from a place of distraction and mind wondering, where you fall deep into believing whatever your mind is telling you and instead, they help guide you back to the present moment, and what is important to you at that time.
Going back to my example, your mind wondered off into the kitchen to get some food, maybe you were hungry but maybe your mind was wanting to be avoidant of doing the work and you allowed yourself to be directed by your mind even though that isn’t what you felt like or wanted to do. Meditation helps you to build your focus and awareness; it builds your ability to be mindful and observant of all things, thoughts, feelings, emotions and actions. So, lovely, why not remind yourself today to go wherever it is your focus is going, be an observer of your mind and feel into its tangents and divergences and see how it feels. FEELINGS and feeling are not bad things, they help us make sense of and allow us to move through and release whatever it is that needs to be let go of.
